Green Tea and Dieting
Green tea has been growing in popularity by leaps and bounds among those people who are attempting to lose weight. Green tea and dieting are more and more going hand in hand, even though green tea's healthy properties have been known to some people, especially Oriental nations, for thousands of years.
Green tea contains caffeine--less caffeine than coffee but more than black tea. Caffeine helps speed up the metabolism which in turn causes the body to burn fats faster.Caffeine is also a diuretic, meaning it causes the body to expel water at a faster rate than normal.
While this can be a bad thing in certain circumstances, for somebody who is trying to lose weight it's important to expel toxins such as inefficiently metabolized fats from the body, and this is one way to do it (just as sweating during exercise is).
Green tea and dieting also go well together because green tea has natural laxative properties, which once again helps to detoxify the body of someone trying to lose weight.
Research has shown that a common problem among those who need to lose weight is that their intestines and colon are clogged up, especially from non-metabolized meat byproducts.
This can lead to bacterial back-ups that wreck the metabolic and digestive processes and result in the body storing more fats than it should. (This is one of the reasons why health practitioners tell most people that they need to get more fiber into their diets.)
Researchers at the Arizona Cancer Center have concluded that green tea, when taken as a prepared concentrate at least, contains enough of a group of chemicals called catechins significantly increase the body's production of enzymes that belong to the glutathione S-transferase (GST) family.
When the body has sufficient enzymatic activity, the foods one eats get metabolized far more efficiently. Fats get converted into energy instead of stores and energy-stealing toxins get flushed from the body. The vast majority of modernized people do not have sufficient levels of enzymatic activity as they should.
What's more, the green tea catechins can dramatically help the activaton of GST enzymes in people who unfortunately were born with a genetic deficiency in this regard, so that people who are more prone to put on extra pounds can be helped in their dieting efforts.
Research suggests that green tea enhances such a wide array of bodily functions--including the functioning of the nervous system, the immune system, healthy blood sugar level monitoring, the replacing of vitamins and minerals, and liver detox--that the body's energy level naturally rises.
Whenever this happens, the body naturally begins burning off its fat stores in order to nourish itself (the secret behind physical exercise's fat burning).
It has also been suggested that green tea can act as an appetite suppressant to help with weight loss (although it should always be kept in mind that starvation is NOT the healthy way to weight loss).
For those who may not like the flavor of green tea there are plenty of extract capsules that can be taken instead. But most research and experience suggest that green tea and dieting belong together.
